Health and Safety

We have implemented health and safety procedures and protocols as it relates to COVID-19. These protocols, which were tested during our Summer Camp season, primarily fall into the categories of intensified cleaning, health and hygiene best practices and social distancing efforts. Our full Health & Safety plan is below.

FAQs

  • Will my child come into contact with other children? With visitors to the Museum? Are you following social distancing recommendations?

We are limiting contact between student groups and employing social distancing strategies. Additionally, we are limiting access to student areas from non-essential personnel like non-School Camp staff and vendors. As of the start of school, our Museums are all closed to the public. It is possible that our Museums may open back up to the general public during the School Camp semester. Should that be the case, Discovery Place is committed to continuing to keep students as safe as possible through all CDC-recommended guidelines.

  • Will my child be required to wear a mask?

Yes, both students and staff will be required to wear face coverings (gator style or bandana). Discovery Place will not provide masks to those who forget to bring one.

  • What are your cleaning practices? What about hand washing?

In addition to daily deep cleanings, classrooms will be cleaned regularly, including before students arrive, after each activity, and before and after snack times and lunch. Among other things, cleaning will include disinfecting of surfaces such as door handles, tables and sinks within each classroom. Students are asked to disinfect their electronic devices and other supplies before arrival each day.

Students will be required to wash their hands upon entering their classrooms, before and after consuming food, before and after activities, as part of all bathroom breaks and upon re-entering the classroom from another area of the Museum. All classrooms will have sinks within the room.

  • What can I do to prepare my child for camp?

Just like you might prepare your child for any new experience, we recommend talking to them beforehand about why they, and their friends in Camp, need to wear face coverings and regularly wash their hands. We also recommend speaking with your child about their virtual school experience and what their school expects of them.

  • How are you screening staff and campers?

Daily health screenings will be required for both students and staff. These screenings include a temperature check and health questions as well as an Emergency & Medical Release Form required prior to the week of Camp.

  • My child has a compromised immune system or other health issue. Is it safe to send them to Camp?

While our goal is to make School Camp safe and enjoyable for all, we realize you may have specific health concerns. Please contact us to discuss any specific concerns.

  • How will you communicate policy changes?

Updates to our policy will be communicated via our website and pre-Camp email from Camp leaders.

  • What about cancellations? Are you updating your cancellation policy?

Two-week notice is required to cancel. You must notify us of cancellation by Monday at 5:00 p.m., two weeks prior to start date. A $10 administration fee per day of Camp applies. Changes to the day of your School Camp are not subject to the administration fee but still require a two-week notice and are subject to availability. For additional questions, please call 704.372.6261 x300 or KSinclair@discoveryplace.org.

  • What are the class sizes? Will all the kids in my child’s class be in the same grade?

There will be a maximum of 16 kids per classroom to allow for proper social distancing and other COVID-19 related guidelines and recommendations.

Classes will be divided by grade bands. So, for instance, we might have kindergarteners and first graders in one group and second and third graders in another. We will base the exact grade bands on what our enrollment looks like.

  • How many staff will be in each class?

We will have two science specialists assigned to each room. They will both be with the class for the core portion of the day.

  • My child doesn’t attend a CMS school. Can they still attend School Camp?

Yes. We will operate School Camp with CMS curriculum pacing and schedules in mind, however students from all schools are welcome to take part in School Camp.

  • What if I need to drop of child off late or pick up early?

Any need for a late drop-off or early pick-up must be arranged in advance. Please contact your student’s camp location directly.

  • What do we need to bring to Camp?

Students will be required to bring their own school supplies, including a computer/tablet, charger/cord, headphones and all school learning packets. Additional supplies to bring each day include lunch and snacks, a water bottle, a book or quiet activity, a change of clothes and a sweatshirt or jacket.

  • What is the daily schedule? How will you ensure student’s follow their bell schedule?

Discovery Place will work with each student to ensure they are online for all live virtual sessions and will complete independent assignments during the school day as time provides. Our Camps will operate on a schedule similar to the one below. It may vary based on CMS schedules.

  • How will you make sure my child is paying attention to their virtual session and engaged?

Staff will employ the tools of Pro-Action, Redirection and Intervention. Additionally, our program employs a behavior management system that will help support classroom rules while also reinforcing the idea that each day is a new opportunity to thrive. Instructors and staff work diligently to reward students for positive behavior and continually strive to identify any situation that might prevent them from having a successful day.

  • Will all my child’s assignments be completed at Camp - including homework? Will I need to follow up on any work at home?

Discovery Place will work with each student to ensure they are online for all live virtual sessions and will complete independent assignments during the school day as time provides. While there is time built into the schedule for asynchronous learning and/or homework, there may be a need for additional work to be completed at home.

  • Will the science enrichment be appropriate for my child's grade level?

All science enrichment will be grade-appropriate and feature activities that align with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools curriculum.
