Get to know the cross orb weaver

Because we’re getting a little closer to Halloween, I thought I’d share some pictures of common spiders found around Charlotte.

Although they may appear scary, spiders are extremely beneficial and are an important part of insect population control.

This common spider, the cross orb weaver (Araneus diadematus), is a true domestic spider, meaning that it is very closely tied to humans by being associated with buildings, gardens and agricultural fields.

This orb weaver has a beautiful cross on its body (hence the name) and builds a large, orb-shaped web. It is not a native species of spider and was introduced in the United States about 100 years ago.

Feeding on small flying insects in ensnares in its web, this medium-sized spider is not dangerous to us, but like all spiders, it can bite.

Remember, spiders are experts in biological pest control and biological pest control is so much better for us and the environment.
